What KickGoing offers to its users?

  • To get a ride with KickGoing one has to download the application. After signing up user needs to register Debit/Credit card details to pay usage charge and for future payments.
  • KickGoing operates a ‘kickspot’, an electric kickboard holder, to not interfere with pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
  • KickGoing can be used by finding the closest kickboard or kickspot through the app and scan the QR code to unlock it.
  • KickGoing operates 24/7 but within the specified area. So if the user leaves the area, a beep sound comes from kickboard and speed gets lowered automatically.
  • KickGoing costs ₩1,000 to start your trip with kickboards. Users will get 5 minutes of ride time for free and then after each additional minute costs ₩100.
  • KickGoing has a ‘transfer service function’, which is exempted from the basic fee if you transfer to another device within 30 minutes after the first boarding.
  • If the user uses the ‘transfer service function’, the basic fee of ₩1,000 is not set, and only an additional fee of ₩100 per minute is immediately granted.
  • Currently, KickGoing is introducing a kickspot in partnership with shared offices, share houses, convenience stores, cafes, and department stores.

Challenges for setting up e-scooter sharing startup in South Korea:

  • The Road Traffic Act of the South Korean government categorizes Personal Mobility Devices as motorbikes and treats them the same as a standard motorcycle.
  • This means the legal way to ride a PMD there is to stay in regular car lanes and wear a helmet. The rider must also be over the age of 16 and hold a two-wheeled motor vehicle driving license.
  • Even there is no law mandating e-mobility devices to obtain the governmental safety certification required of all vehicles on the roads.
  • Legal issues aside, experts warn that it is really dangerous to send e-scooter riders to the roads to travel next to regular cars that are going at much higher speeds.
  • The electric scooters in Korea can be used from 7 am to 8 pm. This time restriction makes it even difficult for commuters for using it as a last-mile solution.
  • Personal mobility devices are growing scope there, but the regulations are not keeping pace, hurting both the industry and PMD riding culture.
